The Stolen Child
Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water-rats;
There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berries
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping
than you can understand.
Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim gray sands with light,
Far off by furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And anxious in its sleep.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping
than you can understand.
Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping
than you can understand.
Away with us he's going,
The solemn-eyed:
He'll hear no more the lowing
Of the calves on the warm hillside
Or the kettle on the hob
Sing peace into his breast,
Or see the brown mice bob
Round and round the oatmeal-chest.
For he comes, the human child,
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping
than he can understand.
Az elrabolt gyermek
Hol a sziklás felvidék lejt
S a Sleuth-erdő a tóba ér
Egy lombos szigetet rejt
Hol verdeső gémtől magához tér
Az álomittas vízi patkány.
Hol rejtett tündér-dézsánkban zsákmány,
Mindenféle termések.
Lopott cseresznyék, pirosak, érettek.
Jöjj el, ó embergyermek!
Várnak rád vizek, vad ösvények,
Fogd egy tündér kezét, kezeddel
Mert több a könny a világban
mint amit látsz gyermekszemmel.
Hol a holdfény hulláma ragyogva táncol,
S a komor szürke homokon csillan fel,
A Rosses pontnál, messze távol,
Mi csak vonulunk egész éjjel.
Hajlongós ősi táncok,
Összekulcsolt kezek, összeakadt pillantások.
Amíg a hold tova száll,
Mi szökellünk ide-oda
S kergetőzünk gyöngyöző habbal
Mialatt a világ tele gonddal, bajjal.
S az aggódás az álmokban sem libben tova.
Jöjj el, ó embergyermek!
Várnak rád vizek, vad ösvények,
Fogd egy tündér kezét, kezeddel
Mert több a könny a világban
mint amit láthatsz gyermekszemmel.
Hol a kóborló víz bugyog fel
A dombokon a Glen-Car-on fölül
A tavacskában, sás között tűnik fel,
Egy csillag, mely néha alámerül.
Kutatunk szendergő pisztráng után,
Fülükbe halkan suttogunk,
Álmaikba nyugtalanságot juttatunk.
Gyengéden hajlanak reánk
A páfrányok, könnyük csöpög
A friss habú patak fölött.
Jöjj el, ó embergyermek!
Várnak rád vizek, vad ösvények,
Fogd egy tündér kezét, kezeddel
Mert több a könny a világban
mint amit láthatsz gyermekszemmel.
A gyermek velünk jön végül.
Szemében komoly csillanás.
Nem fogja hallani többé, ha bődül
A borjú a hegynek oldalán.
S nem hallja már lelkében a tűzhelyet,
A teáskannát, mely békésen énekel.
Nem látja már rohanni a barna kis egeret
A zabliszt körül, aztán ahogy elszelel.
Végül eljössz, embergyermek.
Várnak rád vizek, vad ösvények
Fogd egy tündér kezét, kezeddel
Mert több a könny a világban
mint amit láthatsz gyermekszemmel.
